In order to overcome the practice of motorists fleeing forecourts of petrol stations without paying, is it not possible to introduce a system whereby a vehicle is automatically clamped or secured whilst filling up takes place? (Petrol costs boost rise in drive-offs say police,Gazette, July 16).

Only when a payment has been made should the car be released.

Whilst acknowledging that such a move would be regrettable, given the unpleasant times the nation is currently experiencing it is essential that owners or managers of filling stations are afforded protection against theft of this kind.
