Staff and councillors at the Civic Centre got their walking boots on for a good cause this week as they helped raise cash for primary school teacher Melissa Huggin's cancer treatment.

The five-mile march, on Saturday, was organised to help Melissa, 27, who is battling a rare, life-threatening brain tumour.

Her fiance's aunt, council worker Christine Pegram, is among the friends and family working to raise funds to pay for her expensive Proton Treatment, which is only available in Boston, in the United States.

Mrs Pegram, of Whitebridge Close, Bedfont, said: "It was a great day and people's enthusiasm is just lovely. I'm so grateful to my colleagues for organising this - everyone's been so kind."

Walkers began and finished at the Civic Centre, in Lampton Road, Hounslow.

Melissa is in Boston at the moment but the struggle to raise funds for her treatment is continuing on this side of the Atlantic.
