AN UXBRIDGE newsagent has criticised Government plans to enforce plain cigarette packaging, saying it will not deter the young from smoking.
The ban was announced on Wednesday, with England's chief medical officer arguing that colourful packets help attract the attention of teenagers.
Den Ponton, who runs Den's News in Belmont Road, Uxbridge, said: "No, it won't work. Young people will still smoke no matter what. It could even make smoking more tempting, and it will give more opportunity for smuggled cigarettes to be sold as counterfeit."
Mr Ponton, who himself was prosecuted by Hillingdon Council when a member of his staff sold to an under-age teen last year, feels the tax generated by cigarettes is of valuable resource to the Government.
"If everybody stopped tomorrow they would be in real trouble."
