ROYAL Mail has opened a temporary sorting centre in Greenford which could see up to 450,000 packages a day over Christmas.

The Rockware Avenue site, which opened on Monday ( November 5), is one of eight being set up across the country to deal with the increasing number of people choosing to shop online over the festive period.

It could handle more than 450,000 parcels on the busiest day over the next six weeks.

The other pop up centres are in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Swansea, Bolton, Tamworth, Peterborough and Swindon.

Delivery director Dennis Murphy said: "Christmas is the busiest time of year for Royal Mail and our customers. We have invested in eight dedicated sort centres to increase our scale and improve our flexibility during this important time of year for our customers."

Ealing North MP Steve Pound was on hand to greet the new staff.

“I was delighted to have the opportunity to look round this site and meet some of the staff,” he said. “Royal Mail is a vital part of Christmas and I’m sure they will be working very hard to deliver all mail in time for Christmas, whatever the weather.”

People are encouraged to send Christmas parcels as early as possible and always include the postcode.
