A choirmaster has been nominated for a Pride in Our People Award the harmony he has created in a community choir for adults with learning disabilities, their family and friends.

Edward Henderson runs the Inclusions, sponsored by Certitude, an Ealing-based organisation that provides personalised support for people with learning disabilities, autism and mental health needs.

Edward, 24, who has also worked for Mencap, was nominated by George Venus, a member of The Inclusions and father of Paul Venus who is supported by Certitude. He said: "Edward is a talented musician but he also has a wonderful empathy with everyone. Singing as a group is a great way to meet new friends and involve people with learning disabilities in their community. We only started last year but have already sung in front of a large audience and hope to perform more at public events in the future."

Edward, from West Norwood, started the choir last April and said the musical standard is high.

"I do push them hard because I want them to be as good as they can be," he added. "They get so much out of it and there is also a social side. It's great for people with disabilities to spend time with people without, who aren't their carers. There is a social openness which is missing from a lot of people's lives. I don't think anyone has done anything like this before."
