PRIMARY school pupils have become germ detectives, thanks to infection prevention training from a private hospital.

Pupils from Bishop Winnington-Ingram CofE School in Southcote Rise, Ruislip, were given a lesson in hygiene at BMI Bishops Wood Hospital in Rickmansworth Road, Northwood.

The hospital’s Clean Team, led by infection prevention and control nurse Melanie Spencer, came armed with a UV light box and a special handwash that mimics germs, to show the pupils how easy it is to spread bacteria.

The children, aged three to seven, were taught how germs cause illness and the simplest and most effective way of getting rid of them is soap and water.

Mrs Spencer said: “Our team had a fantastic time teaching the students about handwashing and hygiene. At our hospital, we take great pride in ensuring that we uphold the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness.

“So, it’s an honour to share what we learn in hospitals with children in our local communities.”

Headteacher Gillian Westbrook said: “The pupils really enjoyed the activities, and I am confident that they will continue to practise the good lessons they’ve learned on a daily basis, both at school and at home.”
