CHILDREN from Ruislip handed in a special petition against HS2 signed by more than 1,000 of the borough's youngsters to 10 Downing Street.

The petition had been started by the eldest son of Ruislip Against HS2 chairman Lottie Jones. Samuel Jones, 11, had been upset that he couldn't sign the main petition because he was not eligible to vote.

So instead, a children's petition was taken around schools, youth groups and Hillingdon Outdoor Activity Centre to give young people a voice.

Mrs Jones, who together with Hillingdon Against HS2 chairman Keri Brennan accompanied four children at the steps of the prime minister's residence last Thursday, said it had been a great experience.

"It was Samuel's idea, he was cross he wasn't allowed to sign the original petition and thought it wasn't fair.

"HS2 will affect children just as much and perhaps even more, with school playing fields and HOAC under threat, and they will have to live with the consequences for a long time to come.

"They were very excited to visit Downing Street but disappointed not to meet David Cameron and tell them what they thought about HS2."

Local MPs John Randall and Nick Hurd also joined the children in Westminster. The pair are due to have a formal meeting with campaigners in Ruislip on December 2.
