SCHOOL choirs from around Northwood Hills sang at the lighting of the Christmas lights.

Children from Hillside Junior School, in Northwood Way, Harlyn School, in Tolcarne Drive, Northwood School, in Potter Street, and St John’s School, in Potter Street Hill, all performed as the Mayor of Hillingdon, Councillor Michael Markham, turned on the illuminations in Joel Street on Saturday.

More than 500 people turned out for the event, which was organised by Northwood Hills Residents’ Association. Chairman Andrew Riley said the annual switch-on draws a bigger crowd every year.

“It was a fantastic day,” he said. “The weather was kind to us, and I would like to thank everyone who helped organise the event, and the teachers who put so much time and effort into rehearsing with the children.”

Mr Riley is already looking ahead to next year’s celebration, with a request from Haydon School, in Wiltshire Lane, Eastcote, to take part.

“We will also be working with Northwood Hills Chamber of Commerce next year to put on a Victorian-style event in the evening, so it keeps getting bigger and better.”

Visitors enjoyed mulled wine, mince pies, a raffle, and even provided some singing of their own, with an impromptu rendition of Jingle Bells.
