CHELSEA FC forward Daniel Sturridge had a kickabout with Burlington Danes Academy pupils on an impromptu visit to the school.

The 22-year-old England and Blues striker popped into the Wood Lane school on Thursday just two days after being an unused substitute in their dramatic Champions League game in Barcelona.

His aunt, Birmingham primary school headteacher Ava Sturridge Packer CBE, has worked closely with Burlington Danes principal Sally Coates on national teaching standards reviews.

After hearing good things about the school, he decided to pay a two-hour visit with his parents to meet teachers and pupils who he told: “You have to be prepared to work hard for whatever you want to achieve”

He then took the school's astro-turf pitch to enjoy a quick game with thrilled youngsters.

Ms Coates said: "As we enter exam season Mr Sturridge’s success is a reminder that in the world beyond the school gates talent is rewarded. Perhaps we can also be inspired by the generosity and modesty shown by the Chelsea player in joining his parents to pay us a visit. From the Nou Camp to the BDA astro, true champions never forget their roots."
