I feel I really have to reply to Councillor Marilyn Ashton's rather extraordinary and disturbing letter ('Bill Stephenson should back off', Harrow Observer, January 8).

It speaks volumes about herself and her acute sensitivity to any criticism. My so-called 'very nasty letter' spelt out a few inconvenient truths about Mrs Ashton's claim to be a heritage champion, none of which she has refuted.

As far as I am concerned I and my Labour colleagues will continue to tell it as it really is. Just to set the record straight I have had literally hundreds of communications from Harrow residents deploring the current administration's support for an unplanned, high rise, concrete jungle without any facilities for Harrow town centre and its support for an expensive, substandard, costly new leisure centre.

Thank goodness the economic downturn seems to have put paid to some of these plans for the present.

Hopefully under the guidance of our new chief executive we can work cross-party and in consultation with local residents for a more sensible approach.
