CHAMPIONS Bedfont Green will request permission from the Combined Counties League to play their final match of the season on Bank Holiday Monday.

The fixture, a home derby against Bedfont, is currently set for Saturday, May 2.

And after Saturday's 4-2 win over Epsom & Ewell means nobody can catch Green at the top of the Premier, it is the likely date for them to be handed the league trophy.

But chairman Doug White is keen to avoid a fixture clash with his former club Brentford, where he was once a director, because that is the day the Bees are likely, barring a huge slip up, to be handed the League Two title.

White said: "We may have to switch the fixture anyway if our landlords, Windsor & Eton, finish third in the Southern League, as that would give them home advantage in the play-offs and they would need the ground that day.

"But we are considering asking for a switch anyway as hopefully it would attract more people down to come and join in with our celebrations."

Green will not find out until after the play-offs finish in the respective leagues, if they will be promoted to the Southern League or Ryman League.

But either way, White reckons it will help with their bid to build their own ground back in Bedfont.

He said: "We will be a higher-profile club, so should be able to attract more sponsorship and grants."

White reckons his club's success is all the more impressive as it came just two years after the Combined Counties League was flooded with a load of traditionally bigger clubs, like Chertsey, Egham, Camberley and Epsom & Ewell, after Ryman Division Three was scrapped.

And he had a departing word of advice for the league.

He said: "We have really shaken the Combined Counties League up, and there will be a lot of big teams going for it next season.

"But they need to introduce some play-offs. This is the first season in years we haven't had a team run away with the title and the league be over by Christmas."

A first-half own goal, plus second half strikes from Billy Sentence, Chris Henry and Stuart Blackburn, was enough to clinch victory over Epsom, and promotion in only Green's fifth year in senior football.

And their reserves made it a double celebration by winning the Suburban League North with a 6-1 win over Bedfont.

Anil Arri smashed in four goals, while Dan White and George Tanme completed the rout.
