A CARRY On actress is going nuts in her bid to save a rare tree from the chop.

Alexandra Dane, is ready for a battle to stop the giant Persian walnut tree from being felled by property developers converting the house next door to her Fulham home.

The 71-year-old actress, who starred in risque British films Carry On Loving and Carry On Up The Khyber, is so angry that she has rallied fellow neighbours to sign a petition to save the tree.

It would be cut down to make way for a new basement housing, a cinema and gym and rear extension by Racton Properties.

“This tree has been growing here for about 80 years,” said Ms Dane. “It would be an absolute tragedy if this was to happen.

“I am all for development but it should never come at the cost of the environment.

“I love trees and, while I am no expert, I think walnut trees are rare in London.

“I have had a great response from neighbours and managed to get about 90 signatures which I have handed to the council.

“I am just hoping they see sense and help us save this precious tree.

“This extension would result in a new building overlooking our properties, but I have no problem with that.

“I can just grow my shrubbery and trees to cover it.

“But what I can’t accept is a rare, beautiful tree being chopped down to make way for a cinema and gym, which seems a bit excessive.”

Hammersmith and Fulham Council planning officers must decide whether to allow the development to go ahead by December 13.

A planning statement on behalf of the developer, submitted to the council, said: “The proposals have been constructed to be of little impact to the front aspect of the property and to create a more attractive, efficient space to the rear.

“The client is very willing to be flexible with any issues that are important to the consistency of the area.”

Ms Dane, whose late husband was Scottish sculptor David McFall, said she is determined to carry on fighting her cause regardless of the outcome of any council ruling.
