A care company’s car is still out of action after it was broken into by ‘heartless thieves’ who stole the steering wheel.

Bluebird Care based in Pitshanger Lane is a private company which helps elderly people with daily activities in their homes such as bathing, dressing, preparation of meals, cleaning, shopping and companionship.

Ray Mortimer, director and owner, was told this week it will take an extra fortnight to get the Smart car back from the garage because of delays getting hold of another steering wheel.

The passenger window was broken into and the steering wheel was taken last month but police have now closed the case.

Mr Mortimer said: “My supervisors use the car to visit people in their homes.

“It’s obviously a car that’s used for doing good things and helping people as it’s wrapped with our advertisement and slogans and is well known throughout the area.

“It’s a shame they picked on our particular car. The police were amazed, they never saw anything like it.”

The director of Bluebird Care said the £600 cost is covered by insurance but the company will still be £500 out of pocket because of excess fees.

A spokesman from the Metropolitan Police Service said: “On Friday June 6 at about 9.30am police received a call reporting theft from a motor vehicle.

“Door to door inquires were conducted on neighbouring properties with a negative outcome.

“There was no CCTV covering the scene of the crime and there were no forensic opportunities.

“The investigation, therefore, has been closed.”
