IT WAS double celebrations at a cancer support centre last week.

This year, the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre (LJMC) is celebrating its 20th birthday, and what better way to mark the occasion than picking up a Team Excellence Award at the Macmillan Excellence Awards?

Its award was one of just 15 bestowed by Macmillan, which were presented by Olympic rower Greg Searle MBE.

The judges said the centre had demonstrated an exceptionally integrated, high quality and efficient service.

Head of centre, Rosemary Lucey, said: “We are delighted to have won this award in our 20th anniversary year.

“Since 1993 the centre has been offering services including a drop-in and helpline, pre-treatment sessions, benefits advice, counselling, complementary therapies, workshops etc to those affected by cancer.

“Over the last 20 years LJMC has been at the forefront of pioneering supportive services and has grown from a germ of an idea to a Centre that responds to more than 30,000 requests for help a year.”

The annual awards ceremony, which this year was held at the The Palace Hotel in Manchester, was developed to celebrate the outstanding work carried out by Macmillan professionals.

The 100-strong team based within the Mount Vernon Hospital site in Rickmansworth Road, Northwood, consists of paid and voluntary staff such as healthcare professionals, therapists, support and information specialists and benefits advisers.

The team received a commemorative plaque and £500 prize money.
