LANDLORDS in Harrow and Brent are being urged to rent rooms to students at a new higher education college.

The Greenwich School of Management, just over the border in Ealing, is looking for term-time accommodation for people soon to begin degree courses at its new west London campus.

The college has taken over the former GlaxoSmithKline pharmaceutical company’s headquarters in Greenford Road, Greenford, near Sudbury.

Before it opens in October, the business school seeks to form a network of trusted proprietors with properties that comply with housing legislation and can be recommended to its students as a place to live.

Student accommodation officer Gregory Kirby said: “For many students this will be their first time away from home.

“Many landlords view students with suspicion, stereotyped no doubt by the antics of the comedy The Young Ones, but nothing could be further from the truth. The student today is hard working and focused on their studies.”

Property owners can put forward assured shorthold tenancies or houses in multiple occupation. Prospective landlords can join the Rent a Room scheme, which allows them to receive up to £4,250 a year tax free by letting out furnished rooms in their homes.
