TRAFFIC accidents in a residential area of West Kensington could be avoided by removing misleading road signs, it has been claimed.

Residents and drivers have spoken out about a confusing right turn sign at the junction of Gliddon and Gunterstone Road.

They claim that accidents are caused as it gives the impression that drivers are turning into a one way street, and therefore not expecting oncoming traffic.

This comes after a dust cart plowed into a delivery van last week, as the driver had fallen into this confusing trap.

David White, who was driving the van, said: "I don't know the area very well, but when I got to the end of Gunsterstone Road, the sign made it look like Gliddon was a one way street. As I turned into the road, I was smashed into by a dust cart, as I wasn't expecting anything to be coming that way.

"The dust cart was going quite fast as it pushed me over. I was in the wrong but it really looked like the road was one way. A lot of people came up to me after the accident and asked what had happened and they explained that this was a big issue in this area. I come into the Hammersmith area often, but have never been down this road. The sign is very misleading."

Residents claim that the accident is just one of many that has occurred in the area since the signs were introduced in 2009 as part of measures to improve road safety.

Gunterstone Road resident, James Delamaire, said: "The whole issue goes back years. We had a consultation in 2009 which saw the signs being installed, but since then there's been at least six accidents. The roads around this area are a mess and badly thought out. The new signs were installed to be calming measures, but since then we've had a succession of accidents and a lot more congestion. It's absolute nonsense."

A spokesman for Hammersmith and Fulham Council, said: "The council widely consulted on plans to improve road safety around Gliddon Road in 2009 and the current road signs were part of that consultation. However, we are continuously reviewing road signs - with a view to improving road safety even further - and we will look into the issues around this junction to see if there are improvements that can be made."
