A petition has been launched to introduce a lower 20mph speed limit in a residential Maida Vale street.

Labour councillors have so far collected 50 signatures in support for the reduced speed limit in Elgin Avenue.

Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, leader of the Labour Group, said: “Residents say that Elgin Avenue is becoming more dangerous as drivers speed up and down to the detriment of pedestrians and cyclists.”

He called on Westminster Council to introduce lower speed limits in all residential areas across the borough.

“Introducing a 20mph speed limit in residential areas in Westminster will cut deaths and serious injuries on our roads,” he said.

“It will cut accidents by 40 per cent, save eight lives and 600 injuries every year, as well as saving £50 million a year in hospital, police, ambulance and other costs.”

A council spokesman said: “This petition hasn’t been presented to the council yet. When it is, we will give a full response - as we do with all petitions.”
