A CAFE manager has been fined £2,400 for defying the smoking ban and allowing his customers to light up.

Mr Alix Shad was found guilty under the Health Act 2006, at Hammersmith Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, September 10.

A co-manager of the Shisha Cafe in Russell Gardens, West Kensington, Mr Shad was charged with three offences between December 2012 and February 2013.

The cafe had been warned as early as May last year that its shelter for smoking did not comply with legislation.

The first offence involved five people smoking inside the cafe. The second came after a complaint from a member of the public, when about 20 customers were smoking shisha pipes inside the illegal shelter and the main building. On the third occasion 20 or 30 people were witnessed doing the same.

Mr Shad received an £800 fine for each of the three breaches. He must also pay £950 costs and an £80 victim surcharge. He did not attend court.
