VOLUNTEER cadets had their drill skills put to the test at the Mayor of Harrow’s annual competition, but came out with a trophy at the end.

The competition was fierce with entries from the army cadet force and the air training corps who were tested on their drill and 2.2 rifle shooting.

Harrow’s volunteer police cadets won first place and took the shield home after a great performance, leaving their 70-year-old volunteer leader and ex-drill instructor of the RAF regiment, Ron Barnbrook, proud.

Simon Underwood, youth engagement coordinator, said: “It was a fantastic evening seeing all the cadets together in one place. Mr Barnbrook has a reputation for being a bit of a taskmaster on the drill square but the cadets have nothing but affection for him – a true coming together of different generations.” The cadets were inspected by the Mayor of Harrow, Nana Asante and Deputy Lord Lieutenant John Purnell. Also present was Harrow Borough Commander, Chief Superintendent Simon Ovens, at the event on June 20.
