A hapless burglar was caught red-handed by officers in a back garden with three wrist watches, a designer handbag and perfume.

Michael O’Brien was nabbed in the early hours of April 11 at the family home in Seagrave Road, Fulham.

The occupants were away on holiday but neighbours noticed something amiss and called police to the scene.

He was picked up by officers and despite initially denying responsibility, later admitted the burglary.

The 19-year-old was sentenced to 12 months following an appearance at Croydon Crown Court earlier this month, police said.

The court was told when officers arrived at the home they found a smashed window, and searched the house but found no-one there.

However, they soon spotted O’Brien, from St John’s Close in Fulham , standing in the courtyard.

He told police he was “just passing through”, but when searched, was found to be carrying three wrist watches, a designer handbag and a bottle of perfume on him.

When questioned about the items he told them that the handbag was his, but was arrested and later charged with burglary.

Detective Constable Will Garton, from Hammersmith and Fulham’s Priority Crime Unit, said: “The quick response by officers resulted in the arrest and imprisonment of a burglar.

"His actions have left a family with small children badly affected when they came to know of what he had done and this sentencing has provided them with some comfort.

“I urge anyone who witnesses suspicious activity in their area to call police and we will respond.”
