Students were out of bed and hard at work early, helping neighbours with their gardens.
A team of five volunteers led by Jon Davies, community development coordinator for the Union of Brunel Students at the university in Kingston Lane, spent the day clearing gardens and installing fresh planting in Cobden Close, Uxbridge, on Tuesday last week.
Jon Davies said: “I had four students and myself participate. We were sponsored by Hillingdon Garden Centre, who kindly donated the flowers and plants for the day.
“We engaged with the residents and had a lot of good feedback.
He added that Brunel University students are very active in terms of supporting local charities, for example at Age UK Hillingdon Townfield Centre in Hayes, where they recently helped to run a technology workshop for a group of 20 older people.
Mr Davies said that over the last year, students have given more than 8,000 volunteer hours.
“From our point of view, it’s good for the students to get outside the immediate university circle and to give something back to the community,” he said.
