CONCERNED petitioners have objected to plans to build a car park near a busy road junction.

Nearly 100 residents have signed a petition to stop Brunel University from building the 28-space car park on the campus in Cleveland Road.

Many were unaware of the plans, which include an access road created from Cowley Road, starting close to the entrance to Cowley Business Park.

But petition organiser Cherry Florey told the Gazette of residents' fury when they learnt about the plans.

The 73-year-old Cowley Road resident said: "In the first house I went to the people were fuming.

"We don't want this dangerous entrance when there's only 28 car parking spaces. A lot of people don't know what they're planning and how unsafe it will be for traffic. I don't see why they can't use the King's Road entrance."

If approved, two trees - an apple and a sycamore - would have to be cut down.

Mrs Florey said: "It's right on top of a bus stop and they've got to pull two trees out. Ever since they started building around the university there has been interference with the television. It's going to ruin the environment."

The proposal is currently being considered by Hillingdon Council and is set to go before the Central and South planning committee on August 27. Twenty of the spaces have been designated for disabled parking.

A spokesman for the university said: "Whilst it was important that vehicles could access the new halls of residence being built at the university's western gateway, it anticipated that traffic into the site would be limited, as only a small number of parking places were planned primarily, to enable disabled students to park close to the halls."

The plans will add fuel to the growing row about Brunel student parking, with many residents of the streets around the campus incensed by the daily battle to find a parking space and what they see as thoughtless parking by some students.

The university has built new car parks on the campus in recent years, but there are not enough to accommodate all the car-owning students.
