The brother of a tragic teenager who died after playing football has paid tribute to his ‘caring, selfless’ family member.

Sugenth Jeyakumar, who attended Whitmore High School, in West Harrow, was injured during a football match on Tuesday last week after a goalkeeper kicked the ball and it hit him in the ribs.

The 14-year-old played on, until the pain was too much and significant bruising began to appear on his chest.

He was taken to Northwick Park Hospital, scanned and then transferred for an emergency procedure at St Mary’s Hospital, in Westminster, but after staying overnight and the procedure not materialising, died after suffering from cardiac arrest.

His brother, Rijenth, 21, told getwestlondon : “He was in St Mary’s for a while and my dad was there by his side.

"We didn’t really know what was going on, but then at about 2.30pm his eyes just rolled back and my dad tried to give him CPR but he died.

“He was such a smart, nice kid. He was caring and selfless, and we’ve been blown away by how much people cared about him just from all the comments on Facebook.

“It has been really amazing just how many people have told us about him – he was so modest, but he did charity work and volunteered and stuff I didn’t even know about.

“One girl was crying when she told us about how he used to stay behind so he could help her with her maths. He just did that for people, he never thought about himself, just how he could help.”
