TWO old bridges along a busy stretch of road is being given a revamp to improve traffic flow and increase safety.

Waldegrave Road Bridge and South Bridge on the A406 Hanger Lane is under-going an 18-month transformation to meet new safety demands with the aim of making the stretch of road more pedestrian and cycle-friendly.

The 100-year-old bridges which go over London Underground and Network Rail lines will have new road layouts and will be strengthened to cope with around 50,000 cars which use the road each day.

John Beeston, of Ealing passenger transport users group (EPTUG), said the work is timely.

Waldegrave Road Bridge will be dismantled and removed and a wider bridge will be put in its place with new lanes for traffic turning off the A406.

The South Bridge will be built alongside the existing South Bridge and a new open space with walkways and cycle paths are planned.

A toucan crossing will be built near Ealing Village Road and access between Hangar lane and Inglis Road will be closed off to reduce rat run traffic.

No disruption is expected although there maybe temporary pedestrian diversions in place throughout the works.
