TWO PUPILS from the borough were invited to report on the Queen officially opening the BBC’s new headquarters.

Brentside High students Jaixia and Roland were the only youngsters of 7,000 BBC School Reporting schools across the country to have been asked to cover the launch of Broadcasting House last Friday (7).

Accompanied by English teacher Vesna Klein, the 13-year-olds took places in the press pen amongst many other reporters and commentated live on Radio 4 as the Queen entered the building.

Later, as Her Majesty was leaving, Jaixia and Roland stood in the official line up.

The two were picked by the BBC School Report team as Brentside High is one of the longest standing BBC School Reporting schools since the project started seven years ago.

The school on Greenford Avenue, Hanwell, has participated in every BBC School Report day workshop and National News Day during this time and so were rewarded for their loyalty.

Brentside’s pupils interviewed Sian Williams, co-presenter of Radio 4 Saturday Live and BBC1 newsreader, who said there was an extra sense of anxiety because of the Queen’s arrival but that it was just another day at work.

Jaixia and Roland said: “The event was great and the atmosphere was positively buzzing with excitement. We have a real sense of accomplishment for reporting on the amazing event. We can’t really comprehend what has happened. If we’d have had a daydream about today it would have been just like that.”
