Brentford School for Girls has made one of the most sustained improvements in GCSE results in the UK.

The Department for Education has praised the school for being one of 100 schools nationwide to have received the accolade for GCSE results between 2011 and 2014.

It comes after the school’s results have shot up from 53 per cent of students gaining five A* to C grades, including English and maths in 2011, to 72 per cent in 2014.

David Laws, minister of state for schools, wrote in a letter to the school: “The results are a shining testament to the hard work and success of your staff, governors and pupils.

“I would like to offer my thanks to you and all at your school for your pursuit of the highest standards of educational achievement.”

Headteacher Marais Leenders, said she was delighted the school has been commended. “Students, staff and parents have all worked exceptionally hard over the last few years and this has really paid off,” she added.

“The school is now in an incredibly strong position both locally and nationally. We are very much looking forward to another set of splendid results this summer.”
