FLAMES took over the roof of a Brentford school as firefighters battled to put out a blaze this morning.

The roof of St. Paul's CE Primary School was badly damaged by a fire just moments after children at a summer school in the building were evacuated to St. Paul's church opposite.

Eight fire engines and 60 firefighters battled the blaze at around 10am today (15) to quickly extinguish it.

Sofia Matthew, 8, of Surbiton, was at the summer camp and had to be collected by her father, Anil, who works at GSK. She said "I was the first one to notice the fire. We were drawing and suddenly this man came and told us there was a fire on our roof so we all went out and the church very kindly said we could stay there.

"We were all very excited and there was a lot of smoke but the police and firemen came to put it out so hopefully it's going to be ok."

Rev Derath Durkin is the team vicar for the area. She said: "I came down here straight away and there was so much smoke, luckily nobody was hurt."

The school said builders had been installing a skylight and realised smoke was coming from the roof, so immediately told the summer camp to get out of the building and called the fire service.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is expected.
