Brent Civic Centre was shortlisted but ultimately missed out on a prestigious architecture award that celebrates excellent design and procurement.

The town hall for Brent Council next to Wembley Stadium in Engineers Way, Wembley, was one of 26 finalists in The Prime Minister's Better Public Building Award, one of the prizes in the British Construction Industry Awards announced on Wednesday.

It replaced the old Brent Town Hall in Forty Lane, Wembley, when it opened in July last year.

Councillor Muhammed Butt (Labour), leader of Brent Council said: "Since opening last year, the Civic Centre has seen thousands of people come and use the many public services that are available here.

"Not only is it a beautiful and eco-friendly building, it's also a brilliant community hub for the residents of Brent.

"There is nothing better than seeing the space being used by Brent school children on a daily basis and I'm proud it's a place where they can come together to learn and socialise."

Brent Civic Centre is officially recognised as the greenest public building in the UK, through its BREEAM 'Outstanding' accreditation, and its boiler is powered on fish oil.

It houses council services, Wembley Library, and the council chamber, The Drum, which can be used for conferences and seminars.

Francis Maude, minister for the Cabinet Office, and Paymaster General, said: "The buildings shortlisted for the Better Public Building Award are exceptional examples of British construction projects.

"From the first spade in the ground, these buildings helped set new standards in construction but will also give something valuable back to their communities.

"As part of our long-term economic plan this government will support the construction industry to ensure these high standards are replicated nationwide so we have the schools, hospitals and other infrastructure Britain needs to compete internationally.
