An Isleworth baby who has fought off cancer just four months after being struck down with the killer disease has been awarded a prize for bravery.

Iris Proops, who is still only 11 months old, received the Little Star award from Cancer Research UK.

The prize, sponsored by clothing chain TK Maxx, is given out annually to recognise the courage of youngsters facing cancer.

Parents Adam and Kate Proops, of Malting Way, were 'devastated' when Iris was diagnosed with a rare liver tumor at six months old.

At the time, doctors thought there was little chance of survival but a few months later Iris is getting back into the swing of normal baby life and looking forward to celebrating her first birthday with a family tea party.

As a robust, healthy baby Iris enjoyed all the things other babies do - especially mashed potato and taking baths - until she suddenly collapsed last August and was rushed to West Middlesex Hospital.

She was transferred to Kings College Hospital, London where a tumor on her liver was found.

After three weeks on a life support machine surgeons decided to operate - but feared a baby so small could not possibly survive.

Luckily, the tumor was successfully removed and dad Adam is able to talk of her 'astounding' turnaround.
Although still undergoing chemotherapy, the prognosis for Iris is better than ever.

Mr Proops told the Chronicle: "It was devastating to be told she had an almost zero chance of survival, so bringing her home for her birthday is an astounding result."

The bravery Iris - and thousands of children like her - show when fighting cancer is exactly what the Cancer Research UK's Little Star award strives to honour.

The accolade recognises the unique struggle children face in trying to remain children whilst struggling with what is usually an adult disease.

Despite battling a deadly disease, Iris is also finding time to learn to walk.

Her grandmother Anita said: "Even when not feeling well she still gives you a great big smile and a giggle."

Cancer Research UK and TK Maxx are inviting nominations from anyone who knows other brave children - under 17 years old - undergoing treatment for or recovering from the disease.

Every child nominated will receive the prize which includes a trophy and certificate signed by famous names.
