A SCHOOLBOY who was airlifted to hospital after being in a collision with a bus is understood to be making a good recovery.

The 10-year-old was making his way to Alexandra Junior School when the incident occurred in Lampton Road, Hounslow, last Thursday, shortly before 9am.

He was taken to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel but a police spokesman said he was moved from the intensive care unit the next day and is now believed to be in a stable condition.

Heather Sullivan, the headteacher at the school, said she had spoken to the boy and his parents regularly since the accident and he appeared to be in good spirits.

"He was really chatty on the phone and it sounds as if he's just left with an injury that's going to take a little while [to heal], but it's looking far better than we could have imagined last Thursday," she said.

"A few of our children were nearby [at the time of the incident] and a girl from the same class showed tremendous initiative at a very difficult time by running back to the boy's house to tell the father what had happened.

"We were able to support children in all sorts of ways and we rang parents, who were understandably concerned, with up-to-date information.

"All the children have made cards and when I last spoke to the boy's mum, she said he'd read them all three times already. It's really touching to see the level of support from the whole community."

Ms Sullivan said all proceeds from the school's bring and buy sale next Friday would go towards the London Air Ambulance service after pupils who witnessed the incident expressed a desire to do something.

The accident, at the bus stop just north of Hounslow Central tube station, involved a training bus.

A spokesman for bus operator London United said: "An internal investigation has been undertaken by London United and we are still co-operating fully with the police while their investigations continue."
