A POPULAR bowling club which looked set to miss out on an agreed £100,000 makeover is on the brink of agreeing a new deal.

Harefield Hospital Bowls Club, which plays at Taylors Meadow, Harefield, hopes the funding will allow it to host teams of young people and disabled players.

Each pub in the village has a team competing at the club in a Sunday morning league.

Last year, the club applied to build new changing rooms and a toilet block, making use of Hillingdon Council's environmental improvements programme, the Chrysalis Fund.

The council agreed to contribute £60,000 with the club putting £15,000 forward, and it was hoped the club would be able to raise an extra £15,000.

However, unable to do so, the club had to put the project on hold.

But it has now been agreed to amend the whole project, so it only costs a more reachable £60,000.

Tony Nelson, chairman of the club, said: "To secure this would mean a great deal to the club.

"Our changing rooms are currently a wooden shack, which is not good enough, so we want a proper brick building built. It would make a big difference.

"At present there are no toilets at the club, which means people have to walk across the park to use the public toilets, but people do not like doing this, particularly the ladies at night.

"As a result, we would be able to use our club a lot more for social events in the evenings, which can only boost the community."

The revised funding bid seeks to house the new toilets and changing rooms in an extension to the clubhouse, rather than a separate building, saving £40,000.

Mr Nelson added: "The Chrysalis Fund have been ever so supportive to us - I can't praise them enough. We are very hopeful this will all be sorted out.

"Our club is doing well at the moment; we are one of the best attended bowling clubs in the borough, with a wide age range, which I think is down to the pub league, although we are always looking for new members."

A meeting will take place today (Wednesday), when the proposals are expected to be rubber-stamped.
