I READ with interest the letter in last week's paper about the restaurant that only serves bottled water.

Firstly, I have no idea which restaurant it is, but it did make me wonder as to the legality of it. I have made a number of enquiries, including the legal helpline at The British Hospitality Association. They told me that as far as they are aware there is nothing to prevent the restaurant from stating that they do not serve tap water. I have heard of establishments that charge for tap water, which is not illegal.

Maybe I have not come across this situation before, as I personally prefer bottled water, although I aways decline the offer of ice as I have yet to come across a restaurant making ice from bottled water. However, standard procedure in my restaurant when asked for water is to offer 'still, sparkling or tap'?
