NURSERY care in the borough is to be expanded with the creation of two new children's centres.

The Town hall has applied for government funding to revamp Wood End Library in Whitton Avenue West, Greenford, and Northfields Library, in Northfield Avenue, Ealing.

An extension will be build at the Wood End site while Northfields will be merged with the Log Cabin playground - a charity helping children with disabilities and special needs – and the scout hut by taking over the area currently used as a car park.

The proposals for Wood End Library are expected to be considered at a council planning meeting at the end of the month and the work is hoped to be completed by March next year.

The Northfields Development is yet to be consulted on and will be considered at a planning meeting at a later date. Both schemes will cost about £1.1m with the council picking up about £300,000 of each bill.

Councillor Phil Taylor, cabinet member for customer and community services, said: "We saw there was a need for more children's centres so we applied for funding. There's a logic in young people being nearer libraries as they are then more likely to read.

"And by having the different services in the same building it means facilities can be shared and we get more value for money from council properties."
