Hillingdon Council's latest performance rating has been attacked by an MP and residents who believe services are not up to scratch.

The borough's two-star rating, revealed last Thursday, puts it in the bottom three of the 33 London local authorities.

Despite this, the council's chief executive says he is satisfied with the report.

The Comprehensive Performance Assessment is compiled by The Audit Commission, and rates performance on a scale of zero to four.

John McDonnell, Labour MP for Hayes and Harlington, criticised the two-star, 'improving well' score, and called for an independent inquiry into Hillingdon's performance. He said: "The Audit Commission's assessment demonstrates, worryingly, that Hillingdon continues to scrape along the bottom of the councils' league table.

"I am urging local councillors to set up an independent local community inquiry into why the council is failing so that we can all work together - local councillors of all political parties, local MPs and local community organisations - to address how we can raise Hillingdon's performance."

Mr McDonnell's views were backed by Peter Silverman, who runs hillingdon-watch.org.uk, a website set up to scrutinise the council's work.

Mr Silverman, of Kingsend, Ruislip, said: "If the council's performance keeps improving well, why are we in the bottom three out of 33 London boroughs, and the bottom 20 per cent across the country?"

However the report contains some crumbs of comfort. Hillingdon is improving well in key areas such as educational attainment, children's social care, value for money, housing and benefits services.
