Boris Johnson was in west London this morning to launch a public consultation on the future of the western extension of the congestion charge.

The Mayor will canvas opinions from businesses, residents and drivers around Kensington High Street, meeting a key election pledge to give Londoners a say over the divisive C-Charge scheme.

The extension has provoked anger among west London drivers and traders since its introduction in February last year, amid claims it has hurt business and increased congestion.

The consultation leaflet will ask Londoners whether the extension should be scrapped, changed or kept as it is.

Mr Johnson has promised to act on the findings of the consultation calling it an "exercise in democracy". But environmental groups have cautioned against rolling back the scheme, saying it sends the wrong signal to drivers and will lead to greater emissions.
