Children were treated to a special visit from a Blue Peter star who came to support an exciting way of learning.

Pupils at Healthland School in Eastcote Lane, South Harrow, held an outdoor learning session on July 18 with TV gardening expert Chris Collins.

Mr Collins is working on a campaign with the Royal Horticultural Society which aims to encourage schools to use gardening as a way of learning for children who may not have outdoor space at home.

Head teacher Chris Spruce and his staff are using the school’s outdoor space as a practical and more creative environment to conduct classes.

He said: “Sustainable, organic gardening is a vital part of our curriculum so our new garden classroom will enable even more children to get involved.

“Chris Collins’ enthusiasm for gardening is infectious. Our children were delighted that he could open our regenerated school garden. Our partnership with the RHS has enabled even more teachers and children to get into gardening.

“We are about to open a high school too, where horticulture will be one of the main specialisms that we are proud of.”
