CHILDREN from a Kensington Primary School learned about gardening with the help of a VIP guest this week.

Blue Peter Gardener Chris Collins showed the youngsters from Barlby Primary School one he had prepared earlier as he taught them to create eye-catching potted floral displays.

He was joined at Kensington Roof Gardens on Wednesday (22) by its head gardener David Lewis and staff from the Flower Council of Holland, who organised the event.

Mr Lewis said: “The Roof Gardens in Kensington is a unique environment in London and it provides a perfect backdrop for the children to learn about gardening while potting flower bulbs and getting their hands dirty.”

The pupils were given a demonstration and a tour of the gardens in Kensington High Street, before creating their own displays, which were then judged by the gardeners.

Janah Barakat, nine, won first prize for her display and was given a certificate, a copy of Mr Collins’ new book ‘Grow Your Own for Kids’ and some flower themed window stickers.
