SMOKE billowed out from an empty restaurant and flats in Ealing Broadway on Sunday morning.

Fire-fighters from Ealing, Acton. Park Royal and Wembley were called just after 9.40am where they made their way into the Burger King fast food shop to the roof wearing breathing apparatus.

Smoke could be seen as far as Christ the Saviour Church in Uxbridge Road and the police were called to cordon off the main Ealing High Street as the brigade battled the blaze.

David Reeve, 49, who witnessed the fire, said: "I got there just before the brigade and there was smoke everywhere. The building is being refurbished at the moment and we could see the fire-fighters pulling parts of the roof down. We didn't see many flames but thick smoke and it seemed to be under control by around 11.30am."

The Uxbridge Road was closed from Ealing Common and bus routes were diverted before the road was re-opened at around Midday.
