A local Sri Lankan who built a new village for countrymen who lost everything in the tsunami is auctioning off a cricket bat signed by the whole England team.

Dr Upali Wickrama-Sekera, of Albury Close, Hampton, was devasted when Galle, the port city he grew up in, fell victim to the disaster in 2004, with even the famous Galle Cricket Stadium destroyed.

Four years on and the model village he has built with money from local, UK and international fundraising is up and running, providing a picturesque home to 43 families affected by the tsunami along with a memorial, community centre, shop, medical centre and playground.

Now the England cricket team - who visited Hampton Village Sri Lanka last year - have donated this signed bat, plus two signed photos, to be auctioned off in an online bid to raise money to educate Sri Lankan young people.

To place your bid for either the bat or the pair of signed pictures email hamptonvillage@hotmail.com before 7pm on Friday. The bids will be included in a live auction on Saturday night at a charity dinner at Lensbury in Teddington, where diners will also get the chance to bid.
