Unexpectedly snatched away, that was the fate of a bird in our garden last week. Without warning, a bird of prey appeared out of the sky and pounced on a small bird on the ground carrying it away in its talons.

Not the sort of behaviour you expect to see in London. But, according to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), not that uncommon and probably executed by a Sparrowhawk.

Even if not in quite such dramatic fashion, many of the animals in rehoming centres have experienced being unexpectedly plucked from gardens they love, and being whisked away into unknown territory.

Although hopefully they eventually go on to have happy lives in new homes.

Waiting to be found her new home is Molly who came into the care of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home as her owners moved house and could not take her with them.

Molly likes staying close to home, exploring her garden and sunbathing.

She is affectionate and loves attention. Although she may be shy at first, once she feels safe she likes being stroked and sitting on your lap.

She is looking for a quiet retirement home with a garden. If this could be with you, call 0843 509 4444 or see her at the Battersea site at Priest Hill, Old Windsor.

Don’t forget Battersea’s Muddy Dog Challenge takes place in Brockwell Park on May 10. If you’re interested in participating, visit battersea.org.uk .

Another great day out is the National Animal Welfare Trust’s Open Day on May 4 from 11am-3pm. There will be stalls, dog agility and refreshments. You can also view the animals needing homes. The centre is at Tylers Way, Watford by Pass WD25 8WT.

And finally, for those who want to see birds of prey in flight over London, the RSPB is organising a Peregrine Watch at the Tate Modern starting on July 11.
