THIS week I share with you three issues. The first is the energy that the new Commissioner, Bernard Hogan-Howe, is driving in his commitment to reverse the tables on criminals.

On Thursday, you may have seen TV and newspaper reports about police bringing to justice those who are wanted in communities across London’s 32 boroughs.

More than 2,100 addresses of wanted offenders were searched, resulting in 1,284 people being arrested. You may have seen five officers in Newham who were savagely bitten by a dog while employed on this operation. Brent police’s contribution was 87 arrests, more than 10 per cent of the total. These types of operation will continue.

I leave a message before I move onto the next topic of burglary.

If you are wanted for an offence, I urge you to hand yourself in so we can get the matter cleared.

This will enable you to wipe your slate clean and you get on with your life.

If you don’t, you run the risk of my officers’ entering your home and the home of your family in the early hours of the morning.

I prefer the first option but if I am not given an option, we will do the latter.

Since the disorder last summer, Brent police have executed over 760 search warrants to bring people to justice. We have the best detection rate in London for total crime and we will get you.

Secondly, I need to talk about burglary. Brent has arrested more people for burglary than any other borough in London.

That said, we are approaching 3,000 burglaries for the financial year. That equates to about nine burglaries a day, which when you put into context of a population of more than 300,000 people is not a lot, but it is if you are a victim.

You can help us by keeping your windows and doors secure. Double lock rear patio doors if you have them, leave a light or radio on. There is crime prevention advice on the MPS internet (see below), or you can speak to your local Safer Neighbourhood Team (see below).

If you have any information on someone who is committing burglary, or any offence for that matter, call us in confidence on the details below.

Finally, I wish to acknowledge the efforts of Detective Chief Inspector Steve Burns who was recently awarded the Queen’s Police Medal (QPM) for his dedicated services to policing.

Steve went to Buckingham Palace where he received his medal from Her Majesty.

Steve is a real asset to me and you. His commitment, effort and energy which he drives through his team of detectives to bring offenders to justice, thus protecting you, has been recognised at the highest level.

Out of 150,000 police officers nationwide, only 80 receive this award annually. Only three Met officers received it this year and I am honoured and proud to have Steve working with me to keep you as safe as possible.

As ever, if you have any information, we will act.

You can call us on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, 101, or your local Safer Neighbourhood Team Teams accessed via the Met Police Website, www.met.police.co.uk. In an emergency, call 999.
