Battersea Dogs' and Cats' Home is appealing for west London pet owners to microchip their animals to help reunite strays with their families.
In 2008, 124 stray dogs from Hammersmith and Fulham were taken in by Battersea Dogs' and Cats' Home.
A total of 60 dogs were taken in from the streets of Kensington and Chelsea, while 73 came from Westminster.
The home took in 5,357 pets altogether that year - an increase of 1,100 from the year before.
Scott Craddock, director of operations at Battersea Dogs' and Cats' Home said: "Responsible ownership for us means microchipping your pet and making sure that it has an up-to-date tag so that it can be easily traced back to you."
