Before MacDonald’s, Pizza Hut , Costa or Sainsbury’s there was .. an approved school!

Yes, really. It stood on the corner of the Uxbridge Road and Coldharbour Lane in Hayes, a huge, elegant though somewhat foreboding building stood facing the Uxbridge Road; St Christopher’s Approved School.

Its dorms housed boys and young men sent there by the courts. Built at the turn of the last century its origins stretch back to the mid 19th century with the foundation of what was known as The Hayes Jewish Industrial School.

The whole site was eventually closed and sold off in the 1990s.
