A HEAD TEACHER working in Brent is one of a number of people in the area to be awarded in the Queen's birthday honours list.
Sylvie Libson is head teacher at Oakington Manor Primary School, Oakington Manor Drive, Wembley, and executive head at Furness Primary School, Furness Road, Harlesden.
She said: "I was stunned, I didn't know anyone had nominated me. I am overwhelmed by it all. I love my job and the thing I enjoy the most is seeing children laugh and achieve what they can and reach for the stars. That is the best thing."
Mrs Libson, who lives in Barnet, said she intends to retire in the near future.
She added: "I think this is a wonderful end to a career in Brent and I am very grateful and proud to receive such a fantastic award."
The teacher has been supporting schools in the area for years and will step in if they are in difficulty and has worked in more than 15 schools in the borough.
Mrs Libson was previously head teacher at Fryent Primary School.
Andrea Lesley, the founder of the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Information and Support Service, was given an OBE for her tireless campaigning on raising awareness on the disorder.
The Edgware mother-of-two said: "It was a great honour. It is just wonderful to be awarded an OBE after 20 years of hard work. I have been fighting to have ADHD recognised all my life, and now the Queen recognises me for my work. Many people have criticised me for the work I have been doing, but the families who send all those lovely messages about the work you do make me immensely proud."
The chair of the Afiya Trust, a national charity which promotes better health and social care in the black and minority ethnic community, Sola Afuape was given an MBE for her services.
Miss Afuape, 45, lives in Nightingale Road in Brent and is part of a number of organisations within the community. She said: "I try and do as much as I can to help in the community. One of the benefits of the recognition is that the work we do is recognised and it is not just about the individual."
Miss Afuape said it hadn't really sunk in and she would be taking both her parents to the palace with her to collect the award.
West Harrow professor Graham Furniss (pictured), pro-director for research and enterprise at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in the University of London, has been awarded an OBE for services to higher education and scholarship in the Queen’s birthday honours list, published on Saturday 15 June.
The 63-year-old academic said: "I was delighted. It came as a very welcome surprise - I do not know how it all happened. My family are all very chuffed."
