A NEIGHBOURHOOD in Hanwell has been shortlisted for a nationwide award for 'outstanding community spirit'.
Green Lane is in the running for an award from The Big Lunch group after hosting a series of events. Last year’s gathering was hugely successful, with more than 1,000 residents from a variety of backgrounds attending to enjoy food and music while sharing skills and resources.
Organisers also helped set up an Olympic event to celebrate the torch relay coming through Hanwell last summer. A tabletop fair with children running their own shops was also held, in addition to Hanwell’s first music festival which takes place tomorrow (Saturday).
June Martin, joint organiser of the event, said: “When we started planning our first Big Lunch event back in 2011, I think we underestimated the lasting effect it would have on our community, not to mention the fun that we’d have on the day. We’ve had a great time organising it and it’s wonderful that all our hard work has been recognised in this way.”
The Lottery-funded Big Lunch is an annual event led by the Eden Project, which encourages neighbours to get together on one day a year for a few hours of community, friendship and fun: 8.5million took part last year.
This year’s Big Lunch is on June 2. Visit www.thebiglunch.com to request a free starter pack.
