ASDA has apologised for selling tins which were more than a year past their 'best before' date in Hounslow.

IT consultant Steve Raymond bought a can of the supermarket's own-brand tinned grapefruit in February, only to find the contents had turned green.

When the 38-year-old looked at the lid, he was horrified to discover the tin was marked 'best before' January 2010.

Trading Standards officers from Hounslow Council investigated and found a number of cans were past their recommended use-by date.

The produce in question was immediately removed from the store in Alexandra Way and it is understood no further action has been taken against Asda.

A spokeswoman for the store said: "The quality of our food is our top priority and colleagues at Asda Hounslow check for any out-of-date products on a daily basis to make sure this kind of thing doesn't happen.

"On this occasion we got it wrong and two of our tinned products were on the shelf after their 'best before' date. We have identified the issue and put it right.

"We know we let Mr Raymond down and have offered a gift card as a gesture of goodwill, and hope to see him in the store again soon."

Mr Raymond, of Twickenham Road, Isleworth, said he was worried that a big store like Asda Hounslow had not been rotating stock properly and would be checking dates more carefully in future.

"When I opened the tinned grapefruit it tasted foul, the juice was discoloured and the tin inside was discoloured green," he said.

"I've shopped there for two years and I'm worried how much of the other food I've bought during that time might have been out of date."
