ASPIRING performers have the chance to win a year’s worth of support from Harrow’s cultural hub that will help them launch a career in the arts.

Harrow Arts Centre in Uxbridge Road, Hatch End, is inviting applications from an individual or group involved in visual arts, music, drama, comedy, film and dance and aged between 18 and 25 to become its Young Associate professional development scheme from September.

The package includes training sessions from centre staff and external experts, use of the building’s rehearsal spaces and office facilities, performance and exhibition opportunities with technical support, free and discounted tickets to events, a materials or production budget for their projects, paid work on the centre’s Participation projects, help to find further employment and support to achieve the Gold Arts Award, a nationally recognised qualification.

Roshni Hirani, who started in September 2012 as Harrow Arts Centre’s current Young Associate, said: “To anyone thinking of applying, I say you should definitely apply.
“It will totally open the door and it will also make you realise that there are so many avenues that you could go down.

“You have a really good time when you’re here, meeting other young people and working with them.

“It’s a completely different environment to school and it’s something else you can engage in.

“I would say it’s a really useful year in terms of having hands on experience applying your skills you’ve acquired in school and home and using them in a really positive way.”

Ms Hirani is going to run her own education project ‘Draw And More’ on August 17 and 18 and has her own exhibition in The Gallery at Harrow Arts Centre entitled ‘Hidden Gems’.

The Young Associate scheme is made possible by a grant from John Lyon’s Charity.
