RECENT triumph in a community campaign has led to a lawyer’s decision to run for election as a Perivale ward councillor next May.

Alex Nieora, chairman of North Ealing Against HS2, worked with local people and politicians to secure a tunnel under the borough, a success which has spared hundreds from the noise and disruption of an overground line.

The 29-year-old has also been head of a Perivale residents association for the last five years, representing 230 homes in the area.

Mr Nieora, who grew up in Ealing and has lived in Perivale for the past six years, said: “The success of the HS2 campaign has demonstrated how much I can achieve for my community. Perivale is family to me. The next step is to build on my track record and show what I can deliver as a councillor."

Mr Nieora said he would stand as an independent councillor and contribute an objective and impartial voice to the chamber and its committees.

He said: “I have always been an independent soul. I have strong views on social justice, preserving and enhancing the environment, localism and community empowerment but I don’t want to be held back by party politics or forced to tow the party line.”

He describes himself as full of energy and ideas, one of these being to create an annual festival for Perivale with the aim of bringing people closer together.

Despite having a legal background, Mr Nieora’s greatest interest lies in facing the challenges that the area presents and finding solutions for them.

He has taken forward several campaigns, including working with Ealing Council’s transport department to develop a plan to greatly reduce the volume of HGV lorries using Bilton Road at night.

The community man has also helped with improving street lighting and maintenance in Perivale Station car park and has been involved in pressurising Tesco to tidy up the patch of land they own on Bideford Avenue.

Mr Nieora is currently helping with the Accession project which, in partnership with Ealing Council and other stakeholders, will restore part of Horsenden Farm within the next year.

In his spare time he enjoys painting local scenes and at the moment is working on a piece depicting the Grand Union canal.
