EX-SOLDIERS are afraid to walk home from Hounslow's Royal British Legion Club after a second vicious attack on a member in the space of six months.

Michael Ahern, 72, is still shaken after being punched by two men who ran off with his mobile phone shortly after leaving the club in Whitton Road, Hounslow, on April 12.

The assault, near Cross Lances Road at about 11.30pm, comes after the club's vice-chairman, Rob White, was robbed in nearbyVine Place last October.

His wallet was taken by a crook who pretended to help him after he slipped.

"This is a nice, friendly club where people can enjoy a safe evening out so it's sad that they have to take their chances getting home," said Mr White.

"Some of our older members are so apprehensive they're ordering minicabs rather than taking the bus, which isn't cheap on a pension."

Mr Ahern, who lives off Hospital Bridge Road, Whitton, and spent twoyears in the Navy, said his face was a 'bit of a mess' and his shoulder still ached.

But he remained uncowed, adding: "You have to try to forget it because you can't let these people ruin your life."

Both muggers were black men, aged 27-30 and about 6ft, wearing dark clothing.
