ABOUT 140 children paraded in costumes and danced around the Maypole to celebrate a tradition more than a century old.

The four to 15-year-olds enjoyed the fun at the Brentham Club in Meadvale Road, Ealing, on Saturday.

The girls were dressed in white with flowers in their hair while the boys wore soldier, sailor and forester outfits for the parade around Brentham Garden Suburb led by the Yiewsley and West Drayton marching band.

After the parade the children gathered on the Brentham Club’s field to dance around the Maypole before Freya Gann was announced May queen and crowned by last year’s queen Mia Keelan.

The youngsters enjoyed a celebratory tea at the end of the 103-year tradition which has happened annually except during the Second World War.

May Day committee member Patricia Chapman said: “The children had a lovely day, we had quite a lot of emails saying thank you afterwards. It’s a traditional English festival which is important to uphold and helps people feel part of the community.”
